Our story

20 years of experience

About ASM in Uganda.

Artisanal mining in Uganda started many years back even before this country got independence but it was unregulated. Then there was a gold rush in Mubende between 2013 and 2016, and there was unregulated gold mining. This forced government to evict the unregulated miners in Mubende then. There was loss of property, incomes, livelihoods and the rest. We decided to form an umbrella, and it was out of that experience that we also formed the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small Scale miners. This association will see all the artisanal and small scale miners across the country united, working harmoniously with government and also regulated by government.

What exactly do we do in this association.

Advocacy and Representation: Representing the interests of small-scale miners in discussions with government agencies, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Advocating for favorable policies, regulations, and support systems for small-scale mining.
Regulation and Compliance: Assisting members in understanding and complying with mining laws, regulations, and safety standards. Providing guidance on obtaining necessary licenses and permits.
Training and Education: Offering training programs on safe mining practices, environmental management, and sustainable mining techniques. Educating miners on the economic aspects of mining, such as market trends and pricing.
Resource Management: Promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices to minimize environmental impact. Facilitating access to better mining equipment and technology.
Economic Support: Helping members access financial resources, such as loans and grants, to improve their mining operations. Assisting in forming cooperatives or groups to enhance bargaining power and access to markets.
Community Development: Engaging in community development projects to improve the livelihoods of miners and their families. Addressing social issues related to mining, such as health and education.
Conflict Resolution: Mediating disputes between miners, and between miners and other stakeholders, to ensure harmonious operations.
Networking and Collaboration: Facilitating networking opportunities among members and with other mining associations or industry players. Promoting collaboration for shared benefits and joint ventures.
